The poem on the last image of the slide show won an award in a West Hawaii Today poetry contest and was published in a collection of
Hawaii residents' poetry. The area that inspired the poem lies directly mauka and south of Waikoloa village which didn't exist back then. Afterwards, I received many calls from local residents who shared similar
encounters. It's interesting that 1984 is the same year Mauna Loa and Pu'u 'O'o vents erupted!Part
